Joining the Library

All staff and students are automatically registered with their home campus Library when they join the University. 

Whether enrolled as a student at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ or ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ London, you will need your ID card to pass through the library barriers on your home campus, as well as to borrow library books.

 

Alumni (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Campus)

Graduates of the University may apply for an Alumni User Card free of charge. Membership enables you to borrow up to ten long loans at a time.

Applications can be made in person at the Library Help Desk or by completing the online application form below. N.B. cards will not be produced until the first time an alumni wants to borrow and you will still need to bring photo ID to be let through the barriers at the Pilkington Library.

Accessing the Pilkington Library Building

  • The library building can be accessed during the usual opening hours. However, access may be restricted during busy times, such as exam periods.  See our Opening Hours for more details.
  • Every time you visit the building, you will need to show photo ID at the Welcome Desk.  A member of staff will sign you in & out of the barrier system.

Applying for an Alumni User Card

  • Your Alumni User Card is free of charge.
  • Applications can be made in person at the library’s Help Desk or by using the .
  • Your card will be produced the first time you want to borrow a book. 

Borrowing Books

  • An Alumni User Card entitles you to borrow 10 long loan books.
  • Books can be borrowed on the self-issue machines.  Books automatically renew up to 14 times.

Wi-Fi & Printing

  • To access Wi-Fi services, register on the Imago network the first time you visit the library building. Ask the Help Desk for a code to access the network. This code changes weekly.
  • Printing is technically possible if you download the software onto your device and add print credits. Refer to Campus Printing to learn how to do this.

Your Alumni User Card does not give you access to the following:

  • The library’s subscribed online resources, such as ebooks, databases or ejournals.
  • The library computers.
  • Inter library loan service.

SCONUL Access Visitors

The SCONUL access scheme allows staff and students from participating higher education institutions to use academic libraries across the UK and Ireland.  

You may be eligible if you are a current student, member of staff or researcher affiliated with a participating institution. Your level of access depends on your status and the terms set by your home institution and the host library. 

You must  and wait for confirmation that your application has been approved before visiting. 

 

Pilkington Library (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Campus) 

SCONUL services can be accessed during the enquiry desk opening hours. Please be aware that access for external users is unavailable during certain busy periods of the year. 

When you arrive, please show: 

  • A SCONUL access email confirming your approval to use the scheme 
  • ID from your home higher education institution 

Your external ticket will then be created to allow you to borrow up to 10 long loans which will each renew up to 14 times. 

 

London Campus Library 

Visiting hours for SCONUL users are from Monday-Friday, 9am-7pm. 

When you arrive, please show: 

  • A SCONUL access email confirming your approval to use the scheme 
  • ID from your home higher education institution 

 

You will then be issued with a visitor pass. You may borrow up to 10 long loan books which will each renew up to 14 times. If you would like to borrow books, library staff will need to be available to check them out to you. As such, we recommend emailing london-library@lboro.ac.uk in advance to arrange a time to visit. 

Retired staff/permanent staff in the Students Union (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Campus)

Retired members of University staff and permanent staff in the Students Union may apply in writing to the University Librarian for an external borrowing ticket, which is provided free of charge. These tickets enable you to borrow up to ten long loans at a time for up to four weeks each. 

 

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ College and RNIB staff (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Campus)

Teachers at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ College or the RNIB College can request a staff borrowing ticket without charge on production of an employer's letter of introduction.

Campus Partners (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Campus)

Campus partners of the University will be able to borrow as an external user at the Library using their ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ tenant ID card for free. This allows you to borrow up to ten long loans at a time. Please ask at the Help Desk to check the ID card has been added to our Library system the first time you want to borrow.

Members of the Public (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Campus)

Members of the public over the age of 18 may use the Library free of charge for reference. You will need to show photo ID that proves you are over 18 (e.g. passport/drivers licence) at the Reception Desk on arrival to be let through the entrance barriers and will need to be let out through the exit barriers by the Reception Desk when leaving the building. Please note that the Library reserves the right to restrict access to external users during peak times (mainly Jan and mid May to mid June), so we advise you to check before you visit. 

Members of the public under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by a parent/guardian or teacher to use the Library.

Members of the public who live in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland may apply for an external borrowing ticket free of charge either in person at the Library Help Desk or via the online application form below as a result of the Universities Partnership agreement under the . You will need to provide proof of ID and address to join under this scheme. These tickets enable you to borrow up to ten long loans at a time for up to four weeks each from the Pilkington Library. N.B. we will create the ticket on the first occassion you want to borrow books.

Data retention periods

All user accounts will be deleted six years after expiring in order to meet our data responsibilities.

The University Library is legally obliged to retain the details of each document supply order that it makes for six years in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) and related legislation. Personal data of customers collected by means of the Inter-Library Loan online request form will only be used by the University Library for purposes connected with the provision of an Inter-Library Loan and document supply service and will not be retained for more than six years.
