Preparing for results day
We know supporting a young person through results day can feel daunting. To help, we’ve put together some top tips to help you prepare them.
Have a positive, but honest conversation
Take time to see how they’re feeling and how they think their exams went. Whatever the outcome, it can help to have a backup plan in place, especially if they have concerns about their results.
Research and develop a backup plan
Having a list of alternatives can make a real difference on results day. Work with your young person to create a list of the things that are important to them – including the course content, placement opportunities, accommodation options, location and so on.
Every university and course offers something different. Make sure you and your young person consider different institutions. You may find that somewhere you’ve not even considered before turns out to the perfect choice.
Extenuating circumstances
If your young person has been affected by extenuating circumstances, such as an illness or bereavement, talk to their school or college. It may even be worth contacting their chosen universities before results day. This allows the institution to take the circumstances into consideration when making a decision about their application.
Collect relevant information
If your young person finds themselves going through Clearing, it’s really helpful to have all the information they need in one place. They may be asked for things like their UCAS ID and their grades – this may include their Maths and English Language GCSE results.
How to collect results
On results day, your young person will receive their results from their school or college – this will not show on UCAS.
How results are shared varies across institutions. It could be in person, by visiting the school or college, or online. If needs be, double-check these arrangements – including the date, time and how the results are released.
If your young person decides to go through Clearing, you will need their results.
